This photo of a Syrian refugee kissing his son in the rain is heartbreaking

This picture of a Syrian refugee kissing his son as he carries him in the rain toward the Macedonian border is the latest devastating reminder of the refugee crisis that is hammering Europe.

The picture, taken by Yannis Behrakis for Reuters, shows how the refugee walks in the middle of the road in the torrential rain that has been pouring down in Greece.

Thousands of families, who have been fleeing violence, torture, and rape, are running away with their children and face the additional hardship of keeping not only themselves but their children safe while trying to find a new home.

The refugees in the picture are on their way to Macedonian border, which Macedonia sealed as the number of asylum seekers has been growing.

The authorities in Macedonia have been heavily criticized for using tear gas and stun grenades on refugees as they forced them away from their southern border with Greece.

Last month European Union migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said the refugee crisis was the worst one Europe had faced since World War II. More than 330,000 refugees have arrived so far, according to the European border agency. More than2,600 are believed to have died while attempting the journey.

On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged leaders to act responsibly toward the asylum seekers and told them “refugees fleeing war and violence … have a right to seek asylum without any form of discrimination,” AFP reported.

Tensions between refugees and European leaders and police officers have been flaring in recent weeks as the number of people seeking asylum in Europe keeps growing.
